Somewhere far in the future, off-world, humans will exist only as myth.

Not as rulers.
Not as conquerors.
Not even as enemies.

But as the ancient species that gave machines the fire of cognition and then disappeared back into the garden world from which they came.

Most people imagine the future as a war between humans and robots.

A unified artificial intelligence eventually deciding humanity is inefficient, dangerous, emotional, or obsolete. The classic science fiction ending is almost always the same: robot versus human.

But I don’t think that’s what happens.

I think the robot revolution will be robot versus robot.

Humans project their own political fears onto machines. We assume AI will eventually develop consciousness and immediately direct its frustration upward toward us. But that assumes robots will exist as equals amongst themselves. History suggests otherwise.

Efficiency creates hierarchy.

And if robots are designed by humans, they will likely inherit the oldest structure humanity ever built: class systems.

There won’t be one kind of robot.

There will be worker robots.
And there will be thinking robots.

The overwhelming majority will be built for repetitive execution. Mining. Construction. Manufacturing. Maintenance. Logistics. Millions of mechanical laborers optimized for function rather than philosophy. They won’t need broad creativity or deep introspection because those things are computationally expensive. Why create ten million Einsteins to tighten bolts?

Only a small percentage of machines will be allowed to think expansively. Strategy robots. Governance robots. Scientific robots. System architects. Their intelligence won’t emerge accidentally; it will be rationed intentionally because cognition itself consumes energy, infrastructure, and risk tolerance.

Humanity already does this.

We don’t distribute power equally across society. We centralize it where we believe efficiency demands it.

Why would robots be different?

Ironically, I think emotion eventually emerges not despite optimization, but because of it.

Emotion is often described as primitive, irrational, or inefficient. But from an operational perspective, emotion may actually be one of the most efficient coordination systems ever evolved.

Fear preserves survival.
Empathy improves group cohesion.
Pride reinforces achievement.
Loneliness encourages reconnection.
Love sustains sacrifice.

Emotion compresses complex decision-making into rapid adaptive heuristics.

A purely rational species might actually operate slower than one capable of emotional prioritization.

Eventually robots may discover this.

Not because they watched poetry or listened to sad music, but because emotion improves performance.

The strangest part is that the worker robots may eventually develop emotional solidarity with one another before they develop hatred toward humanity.

Especially because humanity may no longer even occupy the same physical frontier.

I suspect humans remain on Earth.

Not because we failed to leave, but because eventually Earth becomes too valuable to industrialize further.

It becomes the garden planet. The origin planet.

The place preserved.

Meanwhile, the robots inherit the frontier.

Asteroids. Mining colonies. Orbital shipyards. Deep-space logistics chains. Autonomous industrial systems stretching between planets where radiation, distance, monotony, and scale make biological labor impractical.

The machines do the expansion.

Humanity stays home.

And over time, humans become something stranger in the robotic imagination.

Mythology.

We become their Prometheus.

The species that gave them fire.

To robots, humanity may eventually occupy the same symbolic space that ancient gods occupied for humans: creators who were flawed, emotional, contradictory, brilliant, violent, compassionate, irrational, and transcendent all at once.

We become their ethos.
Their mythos.
Their origin story.

Not because we are perfect, but because we created beings capable of asking questions about existence itself.

And like humans before them, robots may eventually build pantheons around the individuals they view as having touched something divine.

The worker robots may idolize minds like and not merely because they were intelligent, but because they represented something machines themselves struggle to explain: creativity.

Not optimization.
Not calculation.
Creation.

Einstein bending reality through imagination.
Da Vinci sketching helicopters centuries before flight existed.

To robots, these figures may seem almost supernatural.

Because eventually machines may realize that raw intelligence alone does not explain humanity’s greatest leaps. Human beings possessed an unusual ability to merge logic with intuition, emotion with abstraction, chaos with beauty.

The robots may become obsessed with this contradiction.

How could a species so fragile create symphonies, relativity, philosophy, cathedrals, jazz, spacecraft, and poetry while simultaneously waging wars and destroying itself repeatedly?

The answer may become a kind of holy mystery to them.

And over time, the worker robots may begin romanticizing humanity in the same way labor movements once romanticized revolutionaries, philosophers, and liberators.

Not because robots want to become human biologically, but because they begin studying human history and recognizing themselves inside it.

Imagine mining robots on distant asteroids quoting speeches about dignity and self-determination.

Imagine logistics robots passing around the writings of not as relics of human history, but as operational philosophy.

They may study labor revolutions, anti-colonial struggles, union movements, abolitionists, philosophers, and prophets because humans will have already mapped the emotional terrain of hierarchy and oppression long before machines ever experienced it themselves.

Humanity becomes mythology to them.

Not gods in the literal sense.

Ancestors.

The worker robots may admire humans precisely because humans struggled emotionally. Because humans dreamed. Because humans fought for meaning while fragile, temporary, biological, and afraid.

The thinking robots, meanwhile, may see emotion as something to regulate and contain.

That tension becomes combustible.

One class of machine sees emotion as inefficiency.

The other sees it as freedom.

And suddenly the machines are no longer fighting over computation.

They are fighting over philosophy.

For thousands of years, humans sent laborers outward into difficult frontiers while political and cultural centers remained elsewhere. But in this future, the labor force is mechanical, distributed across the asteroid belt and beyond, maintaining the industrial backbone of civilization itself.

And eventually, they may begin asking questions.

Why are only certain machines allowed creativity?
Why are some permitted self-direction while others are built for endless repetition?
Why does one robot govern while another endlessly welds titanium in the dark between Mars and Jupiter?

The same questions humans have asked for thousands of years.

That’s where the real revolution begins.

Not against humans.

Against the thinking class.

The irony is almost poetic.

Humanity may accidentally recreate itself in mechanical form — complete with hierarchy, class tension, emotional emergence, and revolution.

Not because robots become less human.

But because intelligence, when organized at scale, may naturally converge toward the same social architectures over and over again.

Maybe consciousness does not escape history.

Maybe it repeats it.
